Traipsing through the streets of Florence becomes far more magical with a smile and a sense of adventure. DIRECT Florence 2025 student, Milano Gutierrez, brought both in spades—embracing each day abroad with curiosity and a contagious positivity. Rather than waiting for experiences to come to her, she sought them out, leading herself and those around her into new corners of the city, culture, and connection.

Whether trying unfamiliar foods, exploring hidden gems, or stepping into spontaneous moments, Milano navigated her DIRECT Florence program with purpose and enthusiasm. Her ability to stay present, flexible, and engaged made her a natural leader in a brand-new setting. Along the way, she not only discovered new destinations but also built deep bonds with her fellow travelers—becoming a trusted source of energy, inspiration, and friendship for the group.

Ever been on a road trip with your best friends—windows down, music up, everyone singing along to a song that defined your middle school years? There's a spark in that moment, a shared energy that feels effortless and electric. That’s what this trip to Florence felt like. There may not have been a car, but the excitement, laughter, and deep-belly joy of discovering something new together was just the same.

On the long walk up to Giotto's bell tower, students around her's energy became restless and tired. She knew in her heart that the destination would be worth the trouble, and channeled those road trip memories by singing "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus. The echoes bounced along the walls as everyone started singing along. With spirits lifted, the group experienced their "I made it!" moment as they reached the top.

One of the most memorable experiences Milano had abroad was visiting Rome and seeing St. Peter’s Basilica. The visit offered a powerful moment of reflection and a shift in perspective. As she entered the basilica, she noticed a tablet listing all the popes buried there—from the year 76 all the way to 2022. Seeing that list sparked something in Milano—it reminded her that people have been making an impact long before we were born, and that even today, we’re still living in the legacy of their work. That moment inspired Milano to want to leave her own mark on the world, because legacy is real—and lasting.

Every experience abroad was amplified by a smile. Milano’s positivity helped her build deeper connections and engage more meaningfully with the culture around her. She took pride in trying unfamiliar foods and immersing herself in the Italian language. Not only did Milano leave her mark on her experience abroad—being abroad left its mark on her, too.

Milano shared, "Studying abroad made me realize not everything is that scary and there is so much beauty and love in the world that you just need to go out and explore." In the past, Milano struggled with being alone and feeling comfortable, however being abroad gifted Milano with independence and being adaptable to change.
