Itinerary

Join us on our first-ever women’s only leadership program. LEAD Barcelona is an incredible way to grow as a leader, meet ambitious college women and learn how to live your best life. Come get inspired in Spain!

Barcelona is the perfect setting for this unique program. Whether you crave culture, history, shopping, nightlife or nature, Barcelona has it all. This women’s only program brings together creative college women from all over the US to Barcelona for a 3-week program through Oglethorpe University. With a focus on leadership, cultural excursions and a supportive environment to empower your inner girlboss, your time on LEAD Barcelona will be transformative.

LEAD Barcelona begins in May and runs three weeks. All students will enroll in the same course – Leadership: Global Theory and Practice – to discover a variety of leadership philosophies, craft your personal leadership style and think critically about Spanish and European examples.

LEAD Barcelona staff will meet you at the airport on arrival day and assist with your transfers to our apartment accommodation. You’ll live in a comfortable apartment and all students will live in the same building to make study dates, coffee breaks and movie nights simple. After you recover from your jetlag, we will host orientation to help you adjust to a new culture and prepare you to start class. Class will meet everyday Monday through Friday and include a variety of outside the classroom activities, site visits and guest speakers. During the first weekend, the whole program will head up to Costa Brava and explore the adorable beach cities of Northern Spain, a favorite summer destinations for the locals.

You will also have a variety of optional cultural activities to enjoy with your fellow LEAD students. Our staff will help you make the most from your time in Barcelona, from touring the iconic Gaudi architecture to visiting the grounds of the 1992 Olympics or even relaxing at the beach and enjoying fresh caught seafood. Barcelona is an amazing city and LEAD Barcelona is an incredible opportunity to get inspired among fellow women looking to make an impact on their campus and in their communities!

Accommodation

You will be staying in the heart of they city, just an 8 minute walk from the beautiful Sagrada Familia and just 15 minutes to the Arc de Triumph. This is one of the best neighborhoods in Barcelona with amazing restaurants and cafes, ideal access to transportation and so many cultural gems. The apartments are spacious with a living rooms and full kitchens. All apartments have air-conditioning (either portal or central units). Most apartments house 5-6 students in each. Our staff will be living on site with the students and available 24/7 to support.

Adventures

One of the best parts of Barcelona is that it is a city surrounded by both beach and mountains. This means that students will have access to  adventure activities such as sailing on the Mediterranean and kayaking to hiking Montserrat and taking a cable car ride!  We believe that adrenaline adventures are one of the best ways to connect with your fellow students. Of course, there are many optional adventures and the LEAD Barcelona staff will be happy to help point you in the right direction.

Service

LeadAbroad believes that service is an important component of any travel experience. In Barcelona, we will partner with local non-profits for a day of service so students can see and experience some of the challenges facing Spain as well as the incredible community members who are taking action to combat it.

Courses

During LEAD Barcelona, you will enroll in one course for a total of three credits from Oglethorpe University.  Everyone participates in the same course: Leadership: Global Theory and Practice. To provide more flexibility in your course selection, you can choose to label these courses in a variety of ways on your transcript under the subjects of interdisciplinary studies, history, politics or sociology.

The LEAD Barcelona course is the first of its kind because it has a unique focus on women in leadership.  From readings to discussion and activities, this class will focus on the unique benefits and challenges for women in leadership with case studies based in Spain and Europe. Past LEAD students say that they have learned more about themselves from this course than any other class taken during their college career. These courses focus on who you are as an individual and where you want to go in life. They allow you to define your vision and values in a way that you may have never thought about before, and they provide you with direction after you return home.

All courses are tentative and subject to change.

Flights

There are two ways to book your travel to Barcelona. First, our recommended option is to reserve a seat on our optional group flight. This is a great way to get to know your fellow LeadAbroad students from the moment you depart the US. Traveling thousands of miles away from home is new and exciting so having familiar faces all around you makes the experience unforgettable. We will announce group flight details in the spring. If the flight is departing from a location other than your hometown, you will need to book your connecting flight independently to meet up with the group flight with a minimum 4-hour layover to connect. No need for any stress on the way to Spain!

You can also choose to book your flight on your own. We will provide a time window when you should arrive at the airport in Barcelona. Whether you are on the group flight or a different flight on arrival day, LeadAbroad staff will be at the airport to greet you with huge posters and even bigger smiles. We will arrange your transportation to the apartments if you arrive within the designated group arrival time frame.
If you are traveling prior to the program, you can also meet us at the apartments to check in with the rest of the group on the same day.

Health & Safety

Your safety is our number one priority on all programs. Our triad staffing model which includes LeadAbroad program directors, interns and Oglethorpe University faculty ensures we have one of the lowest student:staff ratios of any study abroad program. We execute safety procedures in Barcelona including assessment, education, security measures, ongoing monitoring and emergency response protocol. The LeadAbroad Policies, Terms and Conditions document outlines these policies in detail.

We want every student to remain healthy on the program. We combine pre-departure preparation with on the ground strategies to ensure our students are healthy and happy. In addition, we are ready for the inevitable accidents and emergencies.

Prior to departure, every student will complete a detailed health questionnaire. We encourage you to visit your doctor and dentist to ensure that you are up to date on all vaccinations and have complete supply of prescriptions. We also offer international medical insurance through CISI for all LeadAbroad students. It is important to note that this is different than trip protection or travel insurance. We will provide many more details on health and safety information in the student login after you are accepted.
