Cape Point

McKenzie Rowley, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, gives us a unique explanation of her Cape Town experience:

My LeadAbroad experience in Cape Town as told by Dr. Seuss

“Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Cape Town! You’re off and away!”

The day I left for my Lead Abroad adventure I was nervous, yet beyond excited. Little did I know about the life-changing adventures that would be waiting for me in the Cape.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

My time in Cape Town is limited and the experience is what I make of it. I decided to dive in and live with no regrets. During my time here, I have hiked to the top of Table Mountain, skydived from 9,000 feet in the air, explored South African culture, splurged at the Old Biscuit Mill, toured vineyards, stood on the edge of the world, and took a vital leadership role in our community service project, to name a few.

“It’s opener there in the wide open air.”

The view is certainly an eye opener, but it’s not the only thing that has left me speechless. The people here have given me a new perspective on life. It’s called Ubuntu, and it simply means, “people are people through other people.” Ubuntu inspires people to help others in the name of service and fully embrace compassion, respect, and honesty towards others.

“You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights!”

I certainly saw incredible sights when I leaped out of that airplane.

“On and on you will hike, and I know you’ll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are.”

I always enjoy a great challenge, and so I decided to take on the seventh wonder of nature. No big deal, right?

“And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)”

I realized life begins at the end of my comfort zone and success is sure to follow.

“You’re off the Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”

Don’t just go… LEAD in Cape Town, South Africa. What are you waiting for?!
