Sunset at Oia

Ally Duplechain, junior at Louisiana State University

The sunset at Oia is one of the most breathtaking sights that I have ever seen. Here are 5 tips to make sure you make the most of it.

1. Make sure your phone is charged.
The view is absolutely incredible and you’re going to want pictures of the sunset. Make sure that your phone is charged so that you can get pictures of the sunset.

2. Eat Early
People get to the edge of Oia hours early to watch the sunset, so make sure that you eat early with enough time to get a good spot to see the sunset. Nothing is worse than getting to the edge as the sun is setting and not being able to see over a crowd of people.

3. Bring Snacks
There is a cheap market nearby, so we bought snacks and wine with us to snack on while we watched the sunset. You may be there for a couple of hours, so it’s a good idea to bring snacks so that you’re not so hungry that you have to leave the sunset to get food.

4. Find the castle
There was a spot on the edge of Oia that resembled the castle, and about 40 of us were able to sit on the walls and watch the sunset with the most incredible view. There are many different spots to watch it, but the castle provided the perfect atmosphere for us to all experience the sunset together.

5. Hang out after the sunset
As soon as the sunset ended, everyone leaves to go to dinner or shop. A lot of us stayed at the castle after the sun had set, and it was truly a bonding experience. Some of the best conversations and memories that I have are from sitting at the castle after the sun was set with new friends and having great conversations. It was definitely worth hanging around after the sun had set.
