Exploring Athens with fellow students

Ruthie Helmer, a junior at Miami University, has some great advice for anyone considering studying abroad with LEAD Greece!

1. Speak the language

I know sometimes it can be hard to understand and we sound like we’re butchering it, but making an effort to speak to the locals makes a huge difference! Even if it’s something as simple as “hello” or “thank you”, the Greek people love when you try to communicate with them!

2. Go somewhere new

In America it seems like we chose from the same 5 places to eat. Athens has hundreds of different restaurants, all with AMAZING food! So walk down the street to a new place that you haven’t been to. You won’t regret it!

3. Learn how to take the Metro

Taking public transportation may be intimidating at first, but take a buddy and find your way! I suggest writing down directions so you remember what to do and how to get there.

4. Take pictures

You can never have to many pictures! Athens is the most beautiful city in the world and you might not be able to recall everything that you saw on your trip once you get home. Take as many photos as possible and put together a scrapbook at the end of your trip!

5. Don’t stress about what’s happening at home

You are only in Greece for four weeks of the summer. I know you’re friends are back at home but trust me; they are having way more FOMO than you are. So don’t spend every free second you have searching for wifi. Take in the beautiful views and the amazing people around you. Before you know it, you’ll be back home wishing you were still in Greece.
