Itinerary

Rome studentsOn GO Rome, you will get to meet students from all over the country during the summer of a lifetime in Italy! You will live steps from the Vatican, take classes from world-class faculty and explore all that Rome has to offer. With a focus on independent travel, cultural excursions and unique personal development opportunities, your summer in Rome will be unforgettable.

GO Rome begins in July, runs five weeks and ends in early August. You will enroll in two classes from our Business, Humanities or Communications courses and earn six credits through Oglethorpe University. Our professors are committed to delivering engaging classes that incorporate the local city and sights!

GO Rome staff will meet you at the airport when you arrive on the program start date and will assist with your transfers to our dormitory accommodation. After you recover from your jet lag, we will have orientation to help you adjust to a new culture and prepare to start class. You will take two courses every day, Monday through Thursday, and enjoy three-day weekends to explore Rome, Italy or Europe. The world is your oyster! During the first weekend of the program, we will plan a full group excursion to Florence to explore the city. The remaining three weekends are up to you. Stay in Rome, take the train around Italy to Pisa, Milan or Cinque Terre or hop on a flight to any European destination. If you decide to travel, the GO staff will help you book your flights and accommodations to make sure that you have a great weekend trip.

You will also have a variety of optional cultural activities and weekly community club meetings. Our staff will help you make the most from your time in Rome, from cooking classes to night tours of the Vatican. Rome is an amazing city, and the GO Rome program will take care of the details so you can have a fantastic study abroad experience.

“My 5 weeks abroad with GO Rome was undoubtably the best experience of my life. The staff and teachers were so supportive, encouraging and inspirational. I heard studying abroad would be a fun experience, but it was more than that. I learned so much and grew, I got to explore places I have never been with my 80+ new friends that I plan to keep up with for years to come. This is definitely something everyone should do at least once in their life.”

Courses

GO Rome courses span a variety of subjects including culture, philosophy, communications and art. Our faculty work hard to make their classes engaging and relevant. They also incorporate the local culture into the classroom whether it is through site visits, readings by Roman authors or local examples.

During your study abroad experience in Rome, you will enroll for credit in two courses offered by Oglethorpe University. Below are the potential courses for this summer. When you apply, you will be asked to select your top four class choices, and we will do our best to meet your academic needs. And don’t forget that all classes run Monday to Thursday so, you have three-day weekends to augment your time abroad.

All courses are tentative and subject to change. Below are the summer 2017 courses. Summer 2018 courses will be announced in September.  Summer applicants get top priority for course preference!

Engagement

Our engagement model is the reason the GO programs are different from other Italy study abroad programs. Our team consists of a program director, faculty and peer leaders who will support you during every aspect of your international experience. We do not simply arrange your housing and classes; instead, the our team will focus on your academic, personal and cultural engagement to help you have the best experience possible.

Home Quote 2

The study abroad experience begins with academic rigor. To build upon this learning cornerstone, we infuse relevant in-class discussions, cultural field trips and meaningful conversations with faculty. Because our average class size is about 20 students, it’s easy to engage with the class material and your fellow students as you learn about business, communications, art or history.

Next, our unique study abroad model focuses on personal engagement through our weekly community club meetings. These innovative gatherings provide a safe forum for you to pause and reflect on all that you are experiencing abroad. Each week of the program will have a unique focus such as personal strengths or your vision for your life. Through these intentional conversations, community club is designed to provide a renewed sense of personal purpose and direction while also forging new friendships.

Finally, cultural engagement is created by tours and activities planned by staff and students. In past summers, we have raced in the Color Run 5K, sang along to Mumford & Sons in concert, toured the Colosseum, made our own handmade ravioli and competed to find the best gelato in the city. Our residence director and peer leaders search for all of the coolest cultural events and make them accessible to our students. Or, if there is something that you want to do, let us know and we will help you accomplish it.

“One of my favorite things about this program was the opportunity to travel on the weekends to different places in Europe. So many activities were arranged for us during our time in Rome and really gave us the opportunity to get the full cultural experience of Italy. I will recommend this program to anyone out there who is looking to study abroad. It was truly a life-changing experience.”

Flights

There are two ways to book your travel to Rome. First, you can reserve a seat on our group flight. This is a great way to get to know your fellow LeadAbroad travelers from the moment you depart the US. Traveling thousands of miles away from home is new and exciting so having familiar faces all around you makes the experience unforgettable. We will announce group flight details in the spring. If the flight is departing from a location other than your hometown, you will need to book your connecting flight independently to meet up with the group flight with a minimum 4-hour layover to connect. No need for any stress on the way to Italy.

Students at airport

You can also choose to book your flight on your own. We will provide a time window when you should arrive at the airport in Rome.  If you arrive within the designated timeframe, LeadAbroad staff will be at the airport to greet you with huge posters and even bigger smiles.

If you are traveling in Europe prior to the program, you can also meet us at the dorms to check in with the rest of the group.

Health & Safety

Your safety is our number one priority on all programs. With a triad staffing model including LeadAbroad residential directors, interns and Oglethorpe University faculty, we have a very low student:staff ratio. We execute safety procedures in Italy including assessment, education, security measures, ongoing monitoring and emergency response protocol. The LeadAbroad Policies, Terms & Conditions document outlines these policies in detail.

Students in Rome

We want every student to remain healthy on the program so they can get the most of their time in Italy. Though we are prepared for inevitable health issues, we focus on prevention. We combine pre-departure preparation with on the ground strategies to ensure our students are healthy and happy.

Prior to departure, every student will complete a detailed health questionnaire. We encourage you to visit your doctor and dentist to ensure that you are up to date on all vaccinations and have complete supply of prescriptions. We also offer international medical insurance through TW Lord & Associates for all LeadAbroad students. It is important to note that this is different than trip protection or travel insurance. We will provide many more details on health and safety information in the student login after you are accepted.
