GO Barcelona is an incredible way to spend your summer in one of the most amazing cities in the world! Whether you crave culture, history, shopping, nightlife or nature, Barcelona has it all. This program brings students from all over the US to Spain for a 5-week study center experience through Oglethorpe University. With a focus on independent travel, cultural excursions and unique personal development opportunities, your summer in Spain will be unforgettable.

GO Barcelona begins in July, runs five weeks and ends in early August. You will enroll in two courses from Spanish language, Spanish culture or business and earn six credits through Oglethorpe University. ¿Quieres practicar tu español? Then, sign up for Spanish. Want to learn how to handle international negotiations? Check out our business courses.

GO staff will meet you at the airport on arrival day and assist with your transfers to our dormitory accommodation. After you recover from your jetlag, we will have orientation to help you adjust to a new culture and prepare you to start class. You will take two classes everyday, Monday through Thursday, and enjoy three-day weekends to explore Barcelona, Spain or Europe – the world is your oyster! During the first weekend of the program, we will plan a full group excursion to a regional Spanish city. The remaining three weekends are up to you: stay in Barcelona, adventure in the Iberian peninsula with stops in Madrid, Seville and Granada or hop on a flight to any European destination. If you decide to travel, the GO staff will help you book your flights and accommodations, making sure that you have a great weekend trip!

You will also have a variety of optional cultural activities and weekly community club meetings. Our staff will help you make the most from your time in Barcelona, from touring the iconic Gaudi architecture to visiting the grounds of the 1992 Olympics or even relaxing at the beach with fresh seafood. Barcelona is an amazing city, and GO Barcelona will take care of the details so you can have an incredible summer abroad!

LeadAbroad works to accommodate each student and their individual preferences by providing multiple housing options. Each facility is located near Parque Ciutadella where you can easily walk to the sights, relax on the beach and enjoy great restaurants and cafes. Housing selection will be prioritized based on the date that your application is completed. Here you can see sample photos from our accommodation options. More details for 2017 coming soon!

GO Barcelona courses span a variety of subjects including communications, culture and language. Our capable and caring faculty work hard to make their classes engaging and relevant. They also incorporate the location into the classroom whether it is through site visits, readings by Spanish authors or local examples.

During your experience with GO Barcelona, you will enroll for credit in two courses offered by Oglethorpe University. When you apply, you will be asked to select your top four class choices, and we will do our best to meet your academic needs.  Also, don’t forget that all classes run Monday to Thursday, so you get three-day weekends no matter what!

All courses are tentative and subject to change. Below are the summer 2017 courses. Summer 2018 courses will be announced in September.  Summer applicants get top priority for course preference!

Our engagement model is the secret sauce that makes GO different from other Spain study abroad programs. The GO team consists of a program director, faculty and peer leaders who will support you during every aspect of your international experience. We do not simply arrange your housing and classes; instead, the GO Barcelona team will focus on your academic, personal and cultural engagement to help you have the best experience possible.

Academic engagement begins with your courses: in-class discussions, field trips and conversations with faculty. With an average projected class size of 20 students, you will have an opportunity to know your professor and your fellow students as you learn about language, culture and business.

Personal engagement is created during our weekly community club meetings. These optional gatherings encourage you to pause and reflect on all that you are experiencing abroad. Each week will have a unique focus ranging from your personal strengths to your vision and values. Through intentional conversations, these meetings can provide a renewed sense of purpose and direction for your life while also helping you get to know your fellow students.

Cultural engagement is derived from the plethora of cultural activities that the GO staff will plan as well as the daily life you will experience in Spain. There are plenty of opportunities for you to explore Barcelona and the surrounding area including visiting the monastery at Monserrat, hiking Mt. Tibidabo or learning how to make authentic paella. Our residence director and peer interns search for all of the most authentic cultural events and make them accessible to our students. Or, if there is something that you want to do, let us know and we will help you accomplish it.

“GO was an amazing study abroad program that provided a great balance of school and free time to explore the city. This program was not only a great way to receive college credit in 5 weeks, but also a great way to learn about yourself and others.”

There are two ways to book your travel to Barcelona. First, you can reserve a seat on our group flight. This is a great way to get to know your fellow LeadAbroad travelers from the moment you depart the US. Traveling thousands of miles away from home is new and exciting, so having familiar faces all around you makes the experience unforgettable. We will announce group flight details in the spring. If the flight is departing from a location other than your hometown, you will need to book your connecting flight independently to meet up with the group flight with a minimum 4-hour layover to connect. No need for any stress on the way to Spain!

You can also choose to book your flight on your own. We will provide a time window when you should arrive at the airport in Barcelona.  If you arrive within the designated timeframe, LeadAbroad staff will be at the airport to greet you with huge posters and even bigger smiles.

If you are traveling in Europe prior to the program, you can also meet us at the dorms to check in with the rest of the group!

Health & Safety

Your safety is our number one priority on all programs. With a triad staffing model including LeadAbroad residential directors, interns and Oglethorpe University faculty, we have one of the lowest student:staff ratios of any study abroad program. We execute safety procedures in Barcelona including assessment, education, security measures, ongoing monitoring and emergency response protocol. The LeadAbroad Policies, Terms & Conditions document outlines these policies in detail.

We want every student to remain healthy on the program to ensure they enjoy their time in Spain. Though we are prepared to handle inevitable health issues, we certainly do not want you to miss out on the adventures and fun. Therefore, we combine pre-departure preparation with on the ground strategies to ensure our students are healthy and happy.

Prior to departure, every student will complete a detailed health questionnaire. We encourage you to visit your doctor and dentist to ensure that you are up to date on all vaccinations and have complete supply of prescriptions. We also include international medical insurance through TW Lord & Associates for all LeadAbroad students. It is important to note that this is different than trip protection or travel insurance. We will provide many more details on health and safety information in the student login after you are accepted.
