Itinerary

Waterfall hikeAfter arriving at the Liberia airport, students will head north toward Parque Nacional Volcan Arenal where we will spend the first part of our trip. La Fortuna, a town nestled at the base of this beautiful volcano, is known as the adventure capital of the country. Get ready to raft, hike to waterfalls and relax in hot springs! Also during this first part of the program, we will serve at Proyecto Asis, an animal rescue center that is home to monkeys, birds and other tropical animals. At the rescue center, you would help the caretakers prepare meals for the animals, clean enclosures and make toys for the animals.

We will then travel to Monteverde for the last four days of the program. Here you will fly over the treetops on one of the best canopy tours in the world. In the mountains, you will get a chance to hike and explore an entirely different region of this beautiful country. Then you will head back to the US for the rest of your summer break.

“One of the biggest lessons I took away from my DIRECT trip is how much you can learn about yourself by stepping out of your comfort zone. I never realized how much I underestimated myself until I tried all of the new experiences the program offered. My only regret is that I didn’t try LeadAbroad sooner!””

– Elizabeth Harris, University of Arkansas

Adventures

With Costa Rica’s many mountains, beaches and national parks, adventure is around every corner. While on the program, you will get the opportunity to raft class 2 and 3 rapids down the beautiful Balsa River. This tour is perfect for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts and the great guides will coach you every step of the way. We will also hike to a local waterfall where we will be able to swim in the breathtaking, clear blue water. There is also a lot to do during your free time including cooking classes, hot springs and paddle boarding. LeadAbroad staff will help connect students with fun, safe activities for every minute of the day.

While in Monteverde, students will get to fly over the treetops as the zipline across forests. This is one of the most exhilarating activities and there is nowhere better to do it than Costa Rica. We will then head to the beautiful beaches of Samara where students will get to kayak and snorkel at an island off the coast.

Service

While in La Fortuna, we will serve at Proyecto Asis, an animal rescue center that is home to monkeys, birds and other tropical animals. At the rescue center, you would help us prepare meals for the animals, clean enclosures and make toys for the animals. This rare opportunity to come up close and personal with such beautiful animals and learn how we can better protect them is a rewarding experience. Not only are you experiencing all of the adventure and beauty that Costa Rica has to offer, you are also doing your part to improve the wildlife.

Workshops

In our years of leading transformative experiences,Students in workshop we have discovered the secrets for you to gain the most from your trip. DIRECT Costa Rica combines the best aspects of our lessons into a few, brief workshops. Whether you are discussing your time serving at the Projecto Asis, creating your personal vision statement or sharing personal obstacles with the group, the workshop environment allows you to grow personally.

“I got to share amazing experiences with new friends from across the country, and I discovered that being outside of my comfort zone is one of my favorite places to be. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!”

– Lindsay Nation, University of Georgia

FlightsAirport arrival

Once you are accepted, we will provide detailed information on how to book your flight to Costa Rica. We will give you a recommended itinerary and meet you at the Liberia International Airport (LIR). Our staff will be at the terminal waiting for you with huge posters and even bigger smiles. Students will need to arrive in the recommended arrival window since we will depart for La Fortuna, which is about 4 hours away, directly from the airport.

Health & Safety

Your safety is our number one priority on all programs. We execute safety procedures in Costa Rica including assessment, education, security measures, ongoing monitoring and emergency response protocol. The LeadAbroad Policies, Terms & Conditions document outlines these policies in detail.

Final dinner friends

We want every student to remain healthy on the program so they can get the most of their time in Costa Rica. Though we are prepared to handle inevitable health issues, we certainly do not want you to miss out on the adventures and fun. Therefore, we combine pre-departure preparation with on the ground strategies to ensure our students are healthy and happy.

Prior to departure, every student will complete a detailed health questionnaire. We encourage you to visit your doctor and dentist to ensure that you are up to date on all vaccinations and have complete supply of prescriptions. We also offer international medical insurance through TW Lord & Associates for all LeadAbroad students. It is important to note that this is different than trip protection and travel insurance. We will provide many more details on health and safety information in the student login after you are accepted.
